A devastating outbreak of tornadoes that swept through parts United States is poised to become the worst on record to strike the US during December.
As per reports, some of the largest buildings had been leveled including Kentucky’s 100-year-old Mayfield First United Methodist Church— a cavernous sanctuary with a stone façade.
The century old church had almost entirely collapsed. While, other buildings had been reduced to piles of red bricks.
The rolling pastures and quiet woods that surround Mayfield had been left muddy and with a dusting of leaves but were otherwise intact.
At least 80 people have died in the state, including dozens in a candle factory, and the death toll is expected to rise above 100.
More than 18 million people were under tornado watches amid the outbreak, and the Weather Service issued 146 tornado warnings, the most on record during December.
Fueled by record-setting warm temperatures, the disaster was unprecedented in many ways for the time of year.
The event was triggered by a powerful low-pressure system that lifted from the Southern Plains into the Great Lakes.
Meanwhile, powerful winds at the jet stream level blew from a different direction than those lower to the ground, helping the thunderstorms rotate or become supercells.
