Four sentenced to long jail terms for Perween Rahman murder, fifth accused got seven years in jail


Karachi: After eight years, an anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Karachi has sentenced five people to varied jails terms over the murder of Perween Rahman, the director of Orangi Pilot Project who was shot dead in 2013.
According to the details, five men, including Abdul Raheem Swati, Ayaz Shamzai, Amjad Khan, Ahmed Ali, and Imran Swati, were charged with the murder.
The court had reserved the verdict on Oct 15 after both prosecution and defence sides concluded their arguments in the case. The court issued the final verdict on Friday (today).
Ahmed Ali, Amjad Hussain and Ayaz Swati have been sentenced to 57 years in jail each. Raheem Swati has been sentenced to 52 years in jail, while his son Imran Swati got seven years.
It may be recalled that Parween Rahman was killed on March 13, 2013 on his way home from the office. The Supreme Court had taken suo motu notice of the case.
The verdict of the case was announced late at night after the end of court hours. Media was barred from entering during the verdict. The court also imposed a fine of more than Rs300,000 on the accused.
