Legendary US singer Meat Loaf dies aged 74

Los Angeles: Renowned American singer Meat Loaf passed away Friday, his family announced. He was 74. 

A statement on the artist’s official Facebook page confirmed the news on Friday night.

“Our hearts are broken to announce that the incomparable Meat Loaf passed away tonight with his wife Deborah by his side. Daughters Pearl and Amanda and close friends have been with him throughout the last 24 hours,” the statement said.

“His amazing career spanned 6 decades that saw him sell over 100 Million albums worldwide and star in over 65 movies, including Fight Club, Focus, Rocky Horror Picture Show and Wayne’s World”. 

Meat Loaf, known for hits like Bat Out Of Hell, has sold millions of albums worldwide.

In 1973, Meat Loaf was cast in the original Los Angeles cast of The Rocky Horror Show, playing Eddie and Dr Everett Scott. He took on the role of Eddie in the later film. 

The singer, whose real name was Michael Lee Aday, was honoured with the Hero Award at the annual Q Awards music ceremony in 2016.

Aday was born in Dallas, Texas, on 27 September 1947 and was an only child.
