It's been 82 years since American animated series 'Tom & Jerry’ hit our TV screens in 1940 and thus began the saga of the cat and mouse chase. 

The short film series is one of the most-watched cartoons by many generations.  

Tom and Jerry—created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera under Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGW). 

The cartoon series centers on the rivalry between the titular characters of a cat named Tom and a mouse named Jerry. Many shorts also feature several recurring characters based around slapstick comedy.

The cartoons became the highest-grossing animated short film series in the 60s, beating 'Looney Tunes'. 

Tom and Jerry show has been an inherent part of our childhood and the cat and mouse chase masters continue to delight us even today. 

As fans are celebrating Tom and Jerry’s 82nd birthday, here are some fun facts about the show.

Many of ‘Tom and Jerry’ show lovers did not know that the original names of the characters were Jasper (for cat) and Jinx (for mouse). 

The first episode was titled ‘Puss gets the boot’ and is the longest-ever episode.
