Barcelona: A train driver has died and while 85 others sustained injuries after two locomotives crashed outside Barcelona, Spanish authorities and the regional rail company say.

According to details, the event unfolded at around 6pm when a freight train derailed and crashed into a passenger train at the station in Sant Boi de Llobregat on Monday evening.

"The driver of the passenger train died as a result of the impact," the regional government said in a statement.

Emergency crews said they were helping to remove about 100 people from the passenger train.

The cargo train carrying potash derailed as it came into the Sant Boi station in northeastern Spain. It then smashed into the front of the passenger train, which was pulling out of the station, killing the engineer.

In the meantime, the Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez turned to twitter and wrote: "My deepest condolences to the family of the train driver who died in the derailment”.
