PUBG crosses one billion downloads barrier
Chinese technology company Tencent says its mobile phone action game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) has been downloaded more than a billion times outside of China.
After the announcement from the Chinese company, it has become one of the most successful games in the world.
PUBG Mobile is a game in which a group of players fight one another until only a single combatant is left alive, has been hugely popular since the so-called battle royale style game was launched three years ago.
"PUBG Mobile achieving 1 billion downloads shows that core games, in this case, a AAA Battle Royale title based on the PC IP of the same name, can achieve the same scale in the mobile space," said Daniel Ahmad, an analyst with Niko Partners.
The game has gained immense popularity since its inception three years ago.
According to data analytics firm Censor Tower, new figures for PUBG downloads are just behind Subway Surfers and Candy Crush Saga.
The announcement comes as Tencent reports that its quarterly revenue from online games has increased by 29%. This is due to the increase in the number of users paying for video games in China and the global market.
According to Tencent, "two of its most successful games in the same quarter, Owners of Kings and PUBG Mobile China, have also maintained their top rankings internationally."
