Lahore: Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Ashtar Ausaf Ali Wednesday resigned from his post citing health concerns.

As per sources privy to the matter, Ausaf Ali has excused himself from continuing to work as the attorney general due to "bad health". It may be noted that he has been suffering from some ailment for a while and had also travelled abroad for treatment.

However, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif directed Ausaf to keep serving the post until his replacement is found.

The sources further added that the government has started to look for a new attorney general.

Ausaf was appointed as the new Attorney General for Pakistan after Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif's approval on May 7.

Ashtar Ausaf replaced Khalid Jawed Khan, who resigned on April 9 after former Prime Minister Imran Khan was ousted through a no-confidence motion.

Ausaf has also been the Attorney General during former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s tenure. He has also been the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) for Law and Justice in 2015-16.

Mr. Ausaf has also worked as Advocate General of Punjab twice in 1998-99 and 2012-13.

He served as Advocate General for Punjab twice from 1998 to 1999 and 2012 to 2013 during PML-N's tenure. Ashtar also served as Prosecutor General of the province from 2011 to 2012.

Ali is also the founder of a private law firm Ashtar Ali LLP.

He was also the Attorney General in the Panama case and other cases, and was also the lawyer of former Naval Chief Admiral (retd) Zafar Mahmood Abbasi in the Naval Sailing Club case.
