ECP nominates Mohsin Naqvi as caretaker Punjab CM

Islamabad: The Election Commission nominated Mohsin Naqvi as caretaker Punjab Chief Minister and sent his name to Punjab governor on Sunday.

The Election watchdog made the appointment after the parliamentary committee of the Punjab Assembly failed to agree on the name of caretaker Punjab Chief Minister.

A meeting of the six-member committee, comprising three members from each treasury and opposition benches, was held under the chairmanship of Speaker Sibtain Khan which discussed nominations for the high-profile post provided by both sides.

In the parliamentary committee’s meeting, the opposition insisted on names of its candidates while the government emphasized upon naming Ahmed Sukhera and Naved Akram Cheema as caretaker CM of Punjab.

After failure of the parliamentary committee, the matter automatically went to the ECP’s court to choose one name among the proposed names for the said slot.

The process to form caretaker setup in Punjab started on Saturday after the Punjab Assembly was dissolved.  After dissolution of the Punjab Assembly, Punjab Governor Rehman sent letters to CM Elahi and Leader of the Opposition Hamza Shehbaz for the appointment of a unanimous caretaker chief minister.

Both sides initially had provided three names each and later some of the names were dropped and the parliamentary committee held the meeting which failed to reach any consensus.

Pervaiz Elahi announces to challenge  Naqvi's nomination

PML-Q leader and former Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhary Pervaiz Elahi has rejected the name of Mohsin Naqvi for caretaker Punjab CM.

Elahi announced to challenge his nomination and said they would approach the Supreme Court.

“It is a controversial person and we do not accept him as caretaker Punjab CM,” said Pervaiz Elahi while reacting to the ECP’s decision to nominate Naqvi as the caretaker Punjab CM.
