PML-N trounces PTI in Daska by-election
Sialkot: As per unofficial results, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) trounced the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in the NA-75 by-elections on Saturday, bringing the Daska polls saga to a comprehensive end.
Nosheen Iftikhar got 111,821 votes as opposed to Ali Asjad Malhi's tally of 92,019, securing a lead of 19,201 votes. The official tally is yet to be released by the Election Commission of Pakistan.
After polling closed at 5:00 pm, results started pouring in around an hour later in an election that was not marred by reports of voter fraud or violence.
The eyes of the entire country were on NA-75 after the previous by-polls on February 19 which were declared void by the ECP. Later, the Supreme Court of Pakistan ordered that by-elections be held on April 10, rejecting a legal challenge mounted by Malhi to get ECP's order thrown out by the apex court.
More than 20 presiding officers had disappeared for an extended period on the night of the election, an event that led to an unprecedented press release by the ECP, stating that serious irregularities had taken place. Three people died in incidents of firing, with both parties alleging that the other had initiated the violence.
ECP had put strict measures in place to ensure that no further irregularities occur. This included instructions to all presiding officers to have smartphones so that their accessibility isn't compromised.
