Leshan: Devastating landslide in China's Sichuan province has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 14 lives, with five individuals still missing, according to reports from state media outlet CCTV.

The landslide occurred early Sunday morning in a mountainous region near Leshan city in southern Sichuan.

The local government has swiftly mobilized over 180 rescue workers to the site, where search and rescue operations are currently underway.

The incident follows heavy rainfall that affected Leshan city in the days leading up to the landslide, as indicated by weather tracking data.

The downpour has caused significant disruption in southwestern China, prompting the displacement of hundreds of residents.

More than 13,000 disaster warning messages were issued to alert the affected population.

Guangyuan, Nanchong, Dazhou, and Bazhong counties in Sichuan province bore the brunt of the heavy rains, resulting in numerous emergency transfers and evacuations.

In total, 398 emergency transfers were organized to address 392 hazardous situations across ten cities.

Over 2,500 individuals from 1,181 households have been relocated to safer areas since the onset of the rainfall.
