Singapore to deploy police robots for street patrolling
After small-scale trails at Changi Airport’s Terminal 4, now Singapore Police is deploying robots for street patrol.
Singapore: Singapore is set to increase the presence of patrol robots throughout the city-state, according to an announcement made by the Singapore Police Force (SPF) on Thursday.
After successfully conducting small-scale trials for over five years, the robots were initially deployed at Changi Airport's Terminal 4 in April to assist frontline police officers in conducting premises patrols.
Given Singapore's small population and low birth rate, the country relies on technology to overcome manpower limitations, making the deployment of patrol robots a logical step.
The SPF plans to progressively expand the use of these robots across Singapore; however, no specific timeline was provided in the statement.
Equipped with cameras, sensors, speakers, a display panel, blinkers, and a siren, the robots offer advanced capabilities.
An extendable mast fitted with a 360-degree camera provides real-time visuals to officers in a situation room, while a two-way communication channel allows direct interaction with the public.
"The patrol robot is the latest addition to SPF's technological arsenal, capable of autonomous patrol and providing the police with an enhanced situational picture to enable better decision-making," stated the police.
