Peshawar: The Elementary and Secondary Education Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on Monday opened all government and private educational institutions and resumed educational activities in 21 districts of the province.

According to an official notification, educational institutions opened in staggered fashion under COVID-19 related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Educational activities resumed in 21 districts including Battagram, Buner, Lower Chitral, Upper Chitral, Dera Ismail Khan, Hangu, Khyber, Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohistan, Kolai-Palas, Karak, Kurram, Lakki Marwat, Mohmand, Malakand, Orakzai, Swat, North Waziristan, South Waziristan, Tank and Torghar.

All private and government schools and colleges along with madrassas will start functioning from now on in the province.

The decision came after meeting of the National Command and Operations Center (NCOC), which was presided over by Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar and co-chaired by Lt Gen Hamooduz Zaman Khan.

Following the meeting, it was decided to allow opening of educational institutions in districts with less than 5 percent positivity ratio in a staggered manner.

The meeting also gave a go-ahead to resumption of tourism sector under stringent Covid-19 measures.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan, Sindh health minister and chief secretaries of all provinces and administrative units attended the session via video link.

The forum decided to carry out a detailed review of the on May 27 and June 7.

Meanwhile, according to NCOC, around 3,060 cases of coronavirus were reported while 57 people succumbed to the disease in the last 24 hours, taking the total death toll to 20,308.

The total number of cases has reached 903,599.

As many as 820,374 patients have recovered from the disease with no critical cases.

In KPK, the confirmed cases have surged to 129,883 in the province with 3,950 casualties.
