Facebook on Friday has suspended former U.S. President Donald Trump’s account for two years, the company has announced.
The social media giant in a highly anticipated decision rout out the former president off the social network through next year's mid-term elections.
As per the latest details, Trump’s account to face suspension until at least January 2023 in a verdict that has been watched closely for signals on how the company will treat rule-breaking world leaders in the future.
"Given the gravity of the circumstances that led to Mr Trump's suspension, we believe his actions constituted a severe violation of our rules which merit the highest penalty available under the new enforcement protocols," Facebook said.
Trump's suspension was effective from the initial date in January and will only be reinstated if conditions permit, Facebook said in a blog post.
Friday’s decision comes just weeks after input from the Facebook oversight board – an independent advisory committee of academics, media figures and former politicians – who recommended in early May that Trump’s account not be reinstated.
Following the Capitol riot, Trump was suspended from several major tech platforms, including Twitter, YouTube and Snapchat. Twitter has since made its ban permanent.
