Stockholm: Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven Monday handed in his notice of resignation, giving parliament's speaker the job of finding a new premier.

The decision came after the Social Democrat leader lost a vote of no-confidence last week. Löfven had a deadline of midnight tonight to announce the decision.
In addition, the Social Democrat, whose governments have already survived six no-confidence motions, became the first Swedish prime minister to lose such a vote.
Lofven had been in power since 2014 and the no-confidence motion was called by the nationalist Sweden Democrats party. However, it ultimately succeeded because the Left Party had withdrawn its support from the government.
