Pakistan’s prosperity dream unattainable without tackling terrorism: PM Shehbaz
Says Pakistan has made significant progress, shifting from a state of darkness toward light

Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif says Pakistan has been put on the path of economic growth with the concerted efforts of the government.
He was addressing a special ceremony in Islamabad in connection with the 'Day of Development and Progress,' commemorated on completion of one-year of the current government in power.
Reflecting on the past year, the Prime Minister stated that Pakistan has made significant progress, shifting from a state of darkness toward light.
He credited this transformation to the collective efforts of the government's team.
The Prime Minister recalled that in June 2023, the International Monetary Fund program was in disarray, and inflation was heavily impacting the people.
However, with the support of the Islamic Development Bank, Pakistan was able to secure a Stand-By Arrangement from the IMF, saving the country from default.
He also highlighted that the salaried class contributed significantly, and paid taxes amounting to three hundred billion rupees, which he credited as a part of the country's financial recovery.
He said due to the government's continued efforts, inflation has also declined.
The Prime Minister urged the business community to present proposals to further strengthen the economy.
He assured that the government would collaborate with the businessmen to evolve policies that increase exports and support the local industry.
Discussing measures to combat smuggling, Shehbaz Sharif noted that Pakistan had successfully exported sugar worth two hundred and eleven million dollars to Afghanistan, which is a result of the government's strict anti-smuggling efforts.
On the issue of law and order, the Prime Minister expressed concern over the resurgence of terrorism, which had been completely eradicated in 2018.
He emphasized that without addressing terrorism, Pakistan's dream of becoming a prosperous and developed nation would remain elusive.
He also paid tribute to the sacrifices made by Pakistan's armed forces in the fight against terrorism.
The Prime Minister said the government is focusing on strengthening industries, boosting exports, especially through IT-led exports and enhancing agriculture sector.
Addressing the ceremony, Minister of Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar highlighted the political sacrifices rendered by the government to save the country.
He said the initiatives taken to provide education and laptops to the youth will help contribute to the nation's progress.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Finance Muhammad Aurangzeb outlined the government's strong performance, citing the increase in foreign exchange reserves and a reduction in the policy rate.
He said that the government is also working on transforming the technology infrastructure within the Federal Board of Revenue and highlighted key initiatives such as the privatization agenda, rightsizing the federal government, and bringing pension reforms.
