JCP approves six new judges for Supreme Court

Islamabad: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) has approved the names of six judges for the Supreme Court. The meeting of the Judicial Commission, chaired by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, was held to discuss the appointment of eight new judges to the Supreme Court.

Sources said that during the meeting, a demand was made to postpone the meeting until a decision was made on the 26th Constitutional Amendment. However, a vote was held on this objection, and the majority decided to continue with the meeting.

According to media reports, Justices Mansoor Ali Shah and Munib Akhtar boycotted the meeting after it was decided not to suspend the proceedings. Barrister Gohar and Barrister Ali Zafar also decided to boycott the meeting.

Later, sources confirmed that the Judicial Commission approved the names of Chief Justice Hashim Khan Kakar of the Balochistan High Court, Chief Justice Ishtiaq Ibrahim of the Peshawar High Court, Chief Justice Shafi Siddiqui of the Sindh High Court, and Chief Justice Amir Farooq of the Islamabad High Court for elevation to the Supreme Court.

Sources also stated that Justice Salahuddin Panhwar of the Sindh High Court and Justice Shakeel Ahmad of the Peshawar High Court were approved to be appointed as Supreme Court judges.

It was further revealed that Justice Mian Gul Hassan Aurangzeb has been approved to be appointed as an acting judge of the Supreme Court under Article 181. Additionally, sources mentioned that the matter of appointing a judge from the Lahore High Court to the Supreme Court was postponed.
