Police confirm arrest of one suspect, but they are still investigating whether there are any other attackers

(Web Desk): A car crashed into a crowd in the western German city of Mannheim on Monday, killing at least one person and injuring several others. Police have confirmed the arrest of one suspect, but they are still investigating whether there were any other attackers. The incident occurred in Paradeplatz, a square in the city's pedestrian-only area.
Police spokesperson Stefan Wilhelm said that while many people were injured, they could not yet say how many or how serious their injuries were. Mannheim University Hospital is ready to handle a large number of casualties and has put its emergency plan into action to care for the wounded.
The crash happened a day after Mannheim’s annual carnival celebrations, which included a large street parade. Carnival festivities are a major tradition in Germany, and many people took a long weekend to celebrate, including on Rose Monday, a day for parades in many cities.
This attack follows several recent violent incidents in Germany, including a car-ramming attack in Munich last month that killed a mother and her child. In December, another car attack targeted a Christmas market in Magdeburg, killing six and injuring hundreds. Mannheim itself has seen violence in the past, including a stabbing at an anti-Islam rally last May, which resulted in the death of a police officer.
Before the crash in Mannheim, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser had stated that there were strict security measures in place for the carnival events. Following the attack, she canceled her planned visit to the Rose Monday parade in Cologne.
Police have asked people to avoid the downtown area of Mannheim while they continue their investigation into the incident.
