(Web Desk): The government of Papua New Guinea has temporarily blocked Facebook to prevent hateful content.
In a statement, the government clarified that this move is a "trial" aimed at stopping misinformation, hate speech, and explicit content.
The shutdown began on Monday under the country's counter-terrorism laws. Authorities have not confirmed when this temporary ban will be lifted.
This decision has faced strong criticism from opposition lawmakers, media groups, and business leaders, who argue that it violates freedom of expression and disrupts economic activities.
Police Minister Peter Tsemali stated that the government is not attempting to suppress freedom of speech but aims to ensure the "responsible use" of social media.
