Dr Lubna Zaheer assumes charge as Chairperson of PEMRA Council of Complaints
Expresses commitment to ensuring that the Council serves as an effective platform for addressing public grievances against electronic media

Lahore: Dr Lubna Zaheer, recently appointed by the federal government as Chairperson of the PEMRA Council of Complaints (Punjab), has formally assumed her responsibilities.
Accompanied by other newly inducted council members, Dr. Zaheer visited the PEMRA Regional Office in Lahore, where she was warmly received by the Director Generals of PEMRA, the Regional Director, and other senior officials.
During the visit, PEMRA officials gave a comprehensive briefing to the new council regarding the regulatory framework, operational protocols, and the expanded mandate of the Council of Complaints. The orientation also covered the rules and procedures governing the complaint redressal mechanism.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Lubna Zaheer expressed her commitment to ensuring that the Council serves as an effective platform for addressing public grievances against the electronic media. "As someone who has served in the media industry as a practitioner and broadcast journalist and as academician, I strongly believe in the freedom of expression.
However, I also uphold the significance of media ethics," she stated. "Our goal will be to strike a balance where freedom of speech is respected, while also ensuring responsible journalism."
Highlighting her prior experience, Dr. Zaheer shared that she had previously served as a member of the Council of Complaints for four years. "The Council today is more empowered, with an expanded jurisdiction, and I am fully aware of the increased responsibility this entails," she added.
She specifically pointed out the inclusion of media workers’ financial grievances within the council’s purview. "One of the most significant developments is that issues like non-payment or delay in the salaries of media professionals now fall within the council’s jurisdiction. Media workers can now file complaints directly with the council, a vital step towards ensuring their welfare and rights," Dr. Zaheer emphasized.
The Council of Complaints, established under the PEMRA Ordinance, plays a crucial role in addressing complaints against TV and radio content, and now, labor-related concerns of media personnel as well.
