‘We farmers can survive on lassi and chutney, but what will the rest of the people do?’

Lahore: Pakistan Kisan Ittehad Chairman Khalid Hussain Khokhar has announced a significant reduction in wheat cultivation for the next season.
Addressing a press conference at the Lahore Press Club alongside other union officials, Khokhar expressed frustration over the government’s treatment of farmers. “Where will farmers get the means to sow the next crop? No one cares about farmers. Should we burn our wheat?” he asked.
He stressed that the wheat issue is not just provincial or local, but a national concern. “Globally, food security is the top priority, but unfortunately, in our country, it comes second,” he added.
Khokhar said that farmers are falling into depression after harvesting their wheat crops. “All they ask for is fair compensation for their hard work. The production cost per 40 kg is Rs 3,400, but we’re only getting Rs 2,000,” he explained.
He sarcastically remarked, “Sugar mill owners are seen as more patriotic. Farmers work all year to feed the nation but are now in mourning. All their hopes rest on wheat.”
He also criticized Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, claiming she has refused to meet with farmers. “Wheat was imported to earn dollars, and no inquiry was held,” he said.
Khokhar concluded by warning that if wheat production drops next year, the public will suffer. “We farmers can survive on lassi and chutney, but what will the rest of the people do?” he said.
