Restrictions on press freedom are cited as main reason for decline


Pakistan has dropped in the World Press Freedom Index.
The international journalism organization ‘Reporters Without Borders’ has released a new report on the status of press freedom in 180 countries.
Pakistan has moved down from 152 to 158 in the World Press Freedom Index, citing restrictions on press freedom as the main reason for the decline.
The report expressed concern over the threats to press freedom around the world, while the growing economic pressure on the media was described as a dangerous problem.
The report said that news agencies are closing down due to economic difficulties in about a third of countries, including the United States, and authoritarian governments are using economic pressure to control the media.
The index expressed concerns over the concentration of media ownership in India in the hands of a few political elites.
The report described the situation in Palestine as disastrous and said that the Israeli army had martyred about 200 journalists.
