Karachi's dams overflowed and water entered several residential areas


Karachi: After intermittent torrential rains, an urban flooding situation has arisen in Karachi. Due to heavy rains, Thadu Dam overflowed, and Malir and Lyari lakes turned into rivers, due to which water entered the surrounding settlements.
Intermittent light and heavy rains continue in Karachi. Due to continuous rain, Karachi's dams overflowed and water entered several residential areas of Scheme 33, including Saadi Town. Malir, M-9, Sohrab Goth, Khamisu Goth, Lyari Lake, Malir Lake, Machar Colony, and other areas were submerged.
The water level in the Malir and Lyari lakes reached the highest level. Due to water entering nearby settlements, citizens were forced to migrate. Rescue 1122, Pakistan Army, and Pakistan Rangers personnel also participated in the rescue operation in the affected areas.
The Meteorological Department has predicted more heavy rain today. The system will turn into a low-pressure system in 8 to 9 hours, which is likely to end on September 11 after reaching the coast of Balochistan.
According to the Meteorological Department, the rain-bearing system is still affecting Sindh with the intensity of a depression. The clouds that bring heavy rain are present in the north of Karachi.
Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab visited different areas of the city throughout the night and reviewed the situation. He called the flow of water in the Malir River dangerous and claimed that such pressure had never been seen here before. Today is a challenge. The administration will be present on the ground.

He stated that a request has been made to the Pakistan Army for help through the Chief Secretary, and Pakistan Army troops have also reached the spot.
He said that the situation in the Lyari Lake is better and is gradually improving. All possible steps are being taken to solve the problems. More than 200 people have been rescued so far. I have never seen so much water in the Lyari River in my life.
Murtaza Wahab stated that the purpose of closing the motorway is to save the lives of citizens. It is expected that the water level will decrease further in a few hours. They are trying to reduce the problems of the citizens and will not leave them alone.
DG PDMA Sindh Salman Shah said that the population around the Lyari and Malir lakes was more affected due to the rains.
Pakistan Army rescue operation
On the other hand, the rescue team, along with the Pakistan Army, rescued 10 people in Saadi Town and the surrounding areas of Karachi.
According to the rescue spokesman, there were reports of people getting trapped due to water accumulation in Saadi Town and the surrounding areas. The rescue team, along with the Pakistan Army, rescued a total of 11 people, including 2 men, 3 women, and 6 children.
Officials say that citizens were rescued from a society near Saadi Town and shifted to a safe place. Due to continuous rain, Pakistan Rangers personnel also participated in the rescue operation in areas affected by the continuous rain, including Malir, M-9, Sohrab Goth, Khamisu Goth, Lyari Lake, Malir Lake, and Machar Colony.
Rangers personnel were participating in relief operations along with the district administration and rescue agencies. Rangers officers and personnel remained on full alert. In this hour of difficulty, Rangers are mobilized to rescue citizens in the affected areas. The situation is being reviewed. More personnel will be deployed if necessary.
Sindh CM directs to monitor Thadu Dam flow
Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah has directed to continuously monitor the flow of water in Thadu Dam and keep the public informed about the situation.
Following the instructions of Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, a report was presented regarding the rescue operation in Khamiso Joki Goth and Malir, in which it was said that a vehicle was swept away in the floodwaters from the spillway of Thadu Dam, and four people were safely rescued.
Commissioner Karachi has submitted a report on the incident to Chief Secretary Asif Haider Shah.
The details of the successful rescue of four people were provided to the Sindh Chief Minister. Murad Ali Shah said that the flow of water in Thadu Dam should be continuously monitored and the public should be kept informed about the situation so that any further trouble or loss can be avoided.
On the instructions of the Chief Minister, Member National Assembly Jam Karim and Member Sindh Assembly Saleem Baloch were also present at the scene.
School holiday
A holiday has been declared in schools today in view of the rain in Karachi. The Commissioner Karachi said that all educational institutions in the city will remain closed today, and a notification has also been issued in this regard.
Earlier, the Private Schools Association had announced the closure of schools even before the government announcement in view of the flood situation after the rain late last night. Various private schools had informed parents about the closure of schools on WhatsApp.
