Meta to launch ad-free subscriptions for Facebook, Instagram in UK
This model is being rolled out in response to increasing scrutiny from European regulators


(Web Desk): Tech giant Meta has announced that it will soon introduce ad-free subscription options for Facebook and Instagram users in the UK in the coming weeks.
According to a report by Reuters, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram stated that users who opt for the ad-free experience will need to pay a monthly fee, while those who choose to continue using the platforms with ads will not be charged.
Under this new policy, users will have two options: pay a monthly fee for an ad-free experience, or continue using the platforms for free with targeted advertisements.
This model is being rolled out in response to increasing scrutiny from European regulators, and it is expected that similar offerings may be introduced in other countries as well.
As per the model, the monthly subscription for the web version of Facebook and Instagram will cost £3, while the iOS and Android app versions will cost £3.99 per month.
This is similar to the model Meta introduced in the European Union to comply with data privacy regulations. Like the EU, the UK’s data protection authority has raised concerns about the use of personal information for targeted advertising.
Meta says the ad-free subscription will give users greater control over their online experience, while still maintaining the ability to offer free services supported by ads.
The company confirmed that paying subscribers will not be shown ads, and their data will not be used for advertising purposes.
