Philippine President said rescue teams would soon arrive at the scene to provide further assistance to the victims

A strong earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck off the southern Philippine island of Mindanao. The quake struck at a depth of about 20 kilometers (12 miles). A tsunami warning has been issued for coastal areas of the Philippines, Indonesia, and Palau.
Immediately after the quake, the Philippine Meteorological and Seismological Services issued a tsunami warning and urged residents of coastal areas such as Davao, Samar, Leyte, Surigao del Norte, and other nearby islands to immediately evacuate to higher ground or move inland to avoid a possible tsunami. The government ordered the closure of educational institutions and the temporary closure of government offices to ensure public safety.
Philippine President Fernando Marcos Jr said officials were assessing the situation and rescue teams would soon arrive at the scene to provide further assistance to the victims.
The Philippines is prone to earthquakes and tsunamis, as it lies on the ‘Ring of Fire’, a region where the Earth’s crust collides with each other.
The quake is the latest in a string of severe natural disasters in the Philippines in recent months, with another 6.9-magnitude quake hitting the country just two weeks ago, killing more than 70 people and injuring hundreds.
After the quake, authorities warned the public to be vigilant as more aftershocks are possible and there is a risk of damage. Boat owners have been told to move their vessels to safer areas due to the threat of a typhoon.
The quake has also raised concerns in the Philippines and surrounding countries, such as Indonesia and Palau, about the potential for tsunamis.
