Meta to discontinue Messenger’s desktop apps for Mac, Windows
Company directed users to enable secure storage feature and set PIN

Facebook's parent company, Meta, has announced that it will shut down Messenger's desktop applications for Mac and Windows from December 15, 2025.
According to Meta, after this decision, users will not be able to access Messenger through the desktop app. Users will now be able to use the web versions of Facebook.com or Messenger.com to continue their conversations. Users using the desktop app will be informed of this change through early notification so that they can save their chats.
The company directed users to enable their secure storage feature and set a PIN so that their chat history remains safe. After December 15, the app will be completely disabled, and users have been advised to uninstall it.
Although Meta did not clarify the reasons for this decision, experts say that this step was taken due to the low usage of the desktop app and the company's focus on mobile and web platforms.
Experts have advised users to immediately back up their chats to avoid the risk of data loss later.
