Remedy Entertainment is finally showing off the much-anticipated sequel to Control. The new game, dubbed Control Resonant, expands on the original with a new action-RPG framework. It takes place seven years later and shifts the setting from the unsettling Oldest House of the original to a more open Manhattan, while putting players in the role of Dylan Faden, brother of Control protagonist Jesse. It’s expected to launch in 2026.
Here’s the basic setup, per Remedy:
> After years in confinement at the hands of the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC), Dylan Faden’s former captors are deploying him at the peak of a supernatural crisis. Charged with combating a mysterious cosmic entity as it alters fundamental aspects of our reality, Dylan must harness his new found powers to take the fight to the myriad threats overwhelming Manhattan. On the path to unlocking the full potential of his supernatural abilities Dylan will also seek out his sister, FBC Director Jesse Faden, as he struggles to comprehend and contain the dangers that have spilled beyond the confines of the Oldest House to tear the world apart.
The sequel was originally known as Control 2, but according to creative director Mikael Kasurinen, the two games are designed to be played in any order, which could explain the new subtitle. During a briefing with press, Kasurinen described Resonant as “not a safe sequel,” saying of Remedy that “we like doing new things.”
One of the big gameplay changes for Resonant appears to be its new shapeshifting melee weapon, though it’s not clear what kind of enemies you’ll be using it against, as Remedy has been careful not to use the word “hiss” in the announcement. While the sequel isn’t being billed as an open-world game, the studio is describing it as its biggest title to date. “We’re pushing the scale beyond anything we’ve done before, elevating combat, exploration, and storytelling into a bigger, more memorable experience,” Kasurinen explained. “It’s ambitious, a little wild, and we can’t wait for players to get lost in it.”
The first Control launched in 2019 and helped kick off a new era for Remedy, one in which the studio worked toward owning and publishing its own games while focusing on a growing interconnected universe, which also includes Alan Wake. However, Resonant’s announcement comes at a challenging time for Remedy. Earlier this year the studio released its first multiplayer and self-published game with FBC: Firebreak, which had a disastrous launch, ultimately leading to CEO Tero Virtala stepping down from his position.
Resonant will be a big part of turning around the studio’s fortunes next year. While it doesn’t have a specific release date yet, it’s going to launch on the PS5, Xbox, PC (via Steam and the Epic Games Store), and Mac (via Steam and the App Store).
