Mahmood Achakzai appointed Leader of Opposition in National Assembly

Islamabad: Mahmood Khan Achakzai, head of the opposition alliance Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Aain Pakistan, has been appointed Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.

The Speaker of the National Assembly signed the notification and handed it over to PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan and leader Amir Dogar.

Earlier during the National Assembly session today, Speaker Ayaz Sadiq had announced that the notification for the opposition leader would be issued on the same day.

Addressing PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar, the Speaker said that the guidance of political parties would help improve the functioning of the House and invited them to consult on related matters. In response, Barrister Gohar reminded the House that the issuance of the opposition leader’s notification had been promised by Thursday.

The appointment follows the disqualification of PTI’s former opposition leader Omar Ayub from the National Assembly. PTI founder Imran Khan had proposed the name of senior politician and prominent leader of the Constitution Restoration Movement, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, for the post of opposition leader.

A request for Achakzai’s appointment was supported by over 70 PTI members, who had long been advocating for his elevation to the position.
