Lawyer Imaan Mazari, husband get 17 years in jail in controversial tweets case

Islamabad: The Islamabad District and Sessions Court on Saturday sentenced Advocate Imaan Mazari and her husband, Hadi Ali, to a combined total of 17 years’ imprisonment each in the controversial tweets case.
Additional Sessions Judge Afzal Majoka announced the short order in the case and also issued a 22-page detailed written judgment.
The court sentenced both accused under Section 9 of the PECA Act to five years’ imprisonment each along with a fine of Rs 5 million.
Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali were subsequently sent to jail on a 14-day judicial remand.
According to the court’s verdict, under Section 10, both were awarded 10 years’ imprisonment each and fined Rs 30 million, while under Section 26-A, they were sentenced to two years’ imprisonment each and fined Rs 1 million.
Overall, the court handed down a cumulative sentence of 17 years’ imprisonment each and imposed total fines amounting to Rs 36 million on both accused.
However, the court acquitted both accused under Section 11 of the PECA Act.
