Colombo: In a high-voltage encounter of the ICC T20 World Cup, India defeated Pakistan by 61 runs to secure qualification for the Super Eight stage.

Chasing a target of 176 runs, Pakistan’s team failed to reach the total. Usman Khan was the top scorer for Pakistan with 44 runs, while Shadab Khan scored 14 and Faheem Ashraf added 10 runs.

Saim Ayub made 6 runs and Babar Azam scored 5. Captain Salman Ali Agha and Mohammad Nawaz contributed 4 runs each. Sahibzada Farhan, Abrar Ahmed, and Usman Tariq were dismissed without scoring.

Shaheen Shah Afridi remained not out on 22 runs. Seven Pakistani batters failed to reach double figures.

For India, Hardik Pandya, Varun Chakaravarthy, Axar Patel, and Jasprit Bumrah took two wickets each, while Kuldeep Yadav and Tilak Varma claimed one wicket apiece.

Earlier, India had set a target of 176 runs for Pakistan thanks to a blistering innings by Ishan Kishan.

Pakistan made an early breakthrough in the first over when Salman Agha dismissed Abhishek Sharma for a duck, with Shaheen Shah Afridi taking the catch.

India’s second wicket fell at 88 when Ishan Kishan, after smashing 77 runs off 40 balls with 3 sixes and 10 fours, was clean bowled by Saim Ayub.

The third wicket went down at 126 as Tilak Varma was trapped LBW by Saim Ayub for 25 runs. On the very next ball, Saim Ayub dismissed Hardik Pandya for a duck.

India’s fifth wicket fell at 159 when Suryakumar Yadav was caught off Usman Tariq after scoring 32 runs.

Earlier, Pakistan had won the toss and elected to field first. After the toss, the Indian captain reportedly did not shake hands with the Pakistani captain, which was described as a breach of the spirit of cricket.

For Pakistan, Saim Ayub took three wickets, while captain Salman Agha and Usman Tariq picked up one wicket each.
