Beijing: Swathes of northern China, including parts of Beijing and the nearby city of Tianjin, are experiencing scorching temperatures, reaching their highest levels in years.

On Thursday, a weather station in Tanghekou recorded a staggering 41.8 degrees Celsius (107 degrees Fahrenheit), making it the hottest location in the country.

Meanwhile, another station in southern Beijing witnessed its first 40-degree day in nearly a decade. Tianjin's Xiqing district also saw a record-breaking June temperature of 40.6 degrees Celsius.

Scientists attribute the intensifying heat waves to rising global temperatures, largely caused by the burning of fossil fuels.
