President Alvi announces 90 days remission in sentences of prisoners on Eid Milad-un-Nabi

Islamabad: President Dr. Arif Alvi announced a 90-day remission in the sentences for prisoners on Eid-e-Milad-Un-Nabi (S.A.W on Wednesday.

According to Article 45 of the constitution, the remission of sentences has been allowed by the President of Pakistan.

The remission in sentences is granted to the convicted prisoners confined in the various prisons of the country.

Moreover, the Prisoners serving terms for murder, espionage, subversion, anti-state activities, terrorism, rape, kidnapping/abduction, robbery, dacoity, or who are otherwise subject to punishments under the 1946 Foreigners Act will not be eligible for this sentence reduction.

In addition, convictions for financial crimes and losses to the national exchequer will not be eligible for the remission. Prisoners found guilty under the Narcotics Control (Amendment) Act 2022 would likewise not be covered by it.

This reduction will apply to men convicts over 65 who have served three-quarters of their sentence.

The order will be applicable to women prisoners above 60 years age passed 1/3rd of their jail term.

Prisoners under the age of 18 who have served more than one-third of their sentence will also benefit from a reduction in their sentence.

The birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is celebrated by Muslims worldwide on the 12th of Rabiul Awwal, the third month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

Eid-e-Milad-Un-Nabi (S.A.W) would fall on Friday, September 29, this year.
