Tashkent: A powerful explosion at a warehouse near Tashkent's airport has resulted in a fire that has since been contained, with the situation now under control, according to Uzbekistan's Ministry of Emergency Situations (FVV).

The exact cause of the explosion remains unclear, although there has been one report suggesting "strong lightning" as a possible trigger.

Unfortunately, there are reports of 162 injuries and one death thus far. In response to the incident, a "special laboratory" has been established at the scene to conduct a thorough investigation into the explosion.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations issued a statement on the Telegram messaging app, stating, "As a result of the quick actions of FVV employees, the area of the fire is being reduced, and the situation is completely under control."

Social media platforms have been flooded with videos and photographs showcasing flames soaring into the night sky and a massive cloud of smoke billowing from the site.

Despite the incident, flights at Tashkent International Airport appear to be operating normally, as indicated by data from the flight tracking website FlightRadar24.

A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued at 2215 GMT on the previous day had indicated that one of the airport's runways would be closed for takeoffs and landings between 0200 GMT and 0700 GMT on the day of the incident.

However, it did not provide any specific reason for the runway closure.

Reports from Uzbek media outlet Daryo revealed that 16 fire and rescue teams were promptly dispatched to combat the blaze, which erupted at one of the warehouses situated in Tashkent's Sergeli district, in close proximity to the airport.
