Islamabad: The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) on Friday issued a show-cause notice to Senator Bahramand Tangi for allegedly supporting a resolution in the Senate, which sought a delay in the February 8 general elections citing security concerns.

The notice issued by the PPP said that Senator Tangi violated party leadership's directives by backing the resolution. The party directed him to submit a reply within a week, failing which disciplinary action may be taken.

The show-cause notice accused Senator Tangi of supporting the resolution and delivering a speech on the floor, contrary to the party's stance favoring the election date specified by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The resolution, moved by independent Senator Dilawar Khan in a session with only 15 lawmakers present, proposed a delay in polls due to extreme weather in hilly areas and worsening security conditions.

The resolution emphasized citizens' right to vote and the ECP's responsibility for conducting free and fair polls. It noted concerns about participation in cold areas during January and February, citing recent threats to political figures' lives and increased attacks on security forces. The Senate resolution called for a postponement of the election schedule to address these concerns and ensure a safe and inclusive electoral process.
