New PM of Pakistan to be elected today
Shehbaz Sharif is the candidate for the post of Prime Minister from PML-N, while Umar Ayub Khan from the SIC will be his opponent.
Islamabad: The newly elected National Assembly will elect the Leader of the House and the new Prime Minister of the country in Sunday’s special session today.
According to the details, Shehbaz Sharif is the candidate for the post of Prime Minister from the ruling alliance, while Umar Ayub Khan from the Sunni Alliance Council (SIC) will be his opponent.
The Speaker National Assembly approved the nomination papers of both the candidates after scrutiny.
According to the Constitution of Pakistan, a candidate for the election of the Prime Minister from the National Assembly must be a Muslim Member of National Assembly (MNA).
Process of PM election in NA
The new Prime Minister will be elected in the special session of the National Assembly today at 11:00am. Before the election process for the post of Prime Minister begins, bells will be rung for five minutes following the order of the Speaker.
The purpose of ringing the bells is to gather all the members inside the assembly. After the bells are rung, the doors of the house will be locked, after which no one will be able to leave or allowed to enter the National Assembly hall until the leader of the house is elected.
The procedure of division of the House will be adopted for the election of the Leader of the House. The Speaker of the National Assembly will read out the names of the nominated candidates for the Premiership.
Speaker of the National Assembly shall allocate right lobby for one nominated candidate and left lobby for the other. Every member of the National Assembly who wants to vote for the candidate, will register his vote at the door of the lobby on that side and then go to the lobby until the election process is completed.
Later, the Speaker will announce the completion of the National Assembly voting and once again the bells will be rung for two minutes for the members to return to the House from the lobby.
After that, the Speaker will announce the election results of the National Assembly Leader of the House, thus the successful candidate will become the Leader of the House in the National Assembly and the new Prime Minister of the country.
