Govt to terminate provision of free electricity to public institutions, officers
Sources within Power Division say decision has been made due to intense public and political pressure
Islamabad: The federal government decided to terminate the provision of free electricity to public institutions and officers, the sources familiar with the development said on Saturday.
The sources said that decision was made due to intense public and political pressure. An emergency plan is to be developed within the Ministry of Energy.
The decision includes ending the provision of free electricity to all government and semi-government institutions. The proposal also entails cutting off free electricity for bureaucrats, judges, and parliamentarians.
Power Division sources further mentioned that the performance of NEPRA and OGRA would also be scrutinized.
In the second phase of the emergency plan, the federal government is considering withdrawing the provision of free petrol as well. The plan ensures that only legitimate facilities are provided to industries and businesses.
Besides it, there is a proposal to reduce MDI charges in factories.
