Malaysian PM Muhyiddin Yassin resigns

According to Reuters, Muhyiddin Yassin has tendered resignation to the King but will continue to serve as a caretaker premier, the palace said in a statement, after months of political turmoil caused by infighting in his ruling coalition.

The palace statement said that Muhyiddin, who came to power in March 2020, will remain as caretaker until a new premier is appointed.

Earlier today, Malaysia's cabinet led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin submitted its resignation to the king, confirmed the country’s science minister Khairy Jamaluddin on Monday.

The news of resignation was shared by Khairy Jamaluddin in an Instagram.

Muhyiddin's strong hold had weakened after weeks of conflicts in his coalition. There is no news as to who would form the next government as no one has a clear majority in parliament.

Malaysia's infections and fatality rates per million people are the highest in Southeast Asia.
