Navjot Sidhu gets one-year jail term in road rage case
The case refers to a 1988 road rage incident.
The Supreme Court Thursday sentenced former Punjab Congress president and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu to one year imprisonment in a 1988 road rage case. He was earlier let off with a mere Rs1, 000 fine.
The case refers to a 1988 road rage incident in which Patiala resident Gurnam Singh had died.
As per the 34-year-old road rage case, Sidhu allegedly beat Gurnam Singh on his head leading to his death.
A Bench led by Justice AM Khanwilkar - which had on March 25 reserved its verdict— allowed the review petition seeking enhancement of his sentence. Now, the maximum possible punishment under Section 323 of the IPC has been awarded to Sidhu.
Sidhu will be taken into custody by Punjab police as per the order.
Despite finding Navjot Sidhu guilty of "voluntarily causing harm" to a 65-year-old man, the Supreme Court spared him jail time and imposed fine.
Later in September 2018, the apex court had agreed to examine a review petition filed by the family members of the deceased and issued notice to Sidhu on it.
Last month, the top court had reserved its order in the plea that had sought stricter punishment for the former minister such as culpable homicide, or even murder, than just causing hurt.
