Islamabad: Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) senator Yousaf Raza Gillani has been appointed as leader of the opposition in senate

The Senate Secretariat has already issued a notification in this regard.
Earlier today, Gillani submitted his nomination papers for the post of opposition leader in the upper house.
The papers were submitted to Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani by Gilani who was accompanied by PPP Senator Sherry Rehman. There were signatures of a total of 30 senators on the nomination papers, including 21 senators from the PPP, two from the Awami National Party, one from the Jamaat-i-Islami, two members from Fata and four from the independent group of Dilawar Khan.
Earlier today, while reacting to the submission of nomination papers by Gillani, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President said that the move came as a shock for Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).
“PDM parties had agreed to nominate PML-N’s Azam Nazeer Tarar as opposition leader in senate. The move is a blow to the goals of PDM, its struggle and unity of opposition,” he said.
On March 03, in the most highlighted and awaited contest of Senate elections, former Prime Minister and Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) joint candidate Yousuf Raza Gillani thumped PTI candidate Abdul Hafeez Sheikh. Gillani registered his victory from an Islamabad’s General seat.
The victory of opposition came as major blow for PTI, after which Prime Minister Imran Khan decided to take a vote of confidence from Parliament.
Later, Gillani also contested for senate chairman but lost to ruling party’s candidate Sadiq Sanjrani by a margin of seven votes.
