New Zealand: Five killed in suspected boat-whale collision
There were “indications” that the boat had collided with a whale.
Wellington: At least five people lost their lives after their boat capsized in waters off of New Zealand’s South Island on Saturday, with “indications” the vessel flipped over after colliding with a whale.
As per officials, the boat had 11 people on board, mostly from a bird-watching group, and overturned in calm waters soon after 10 am at Goose Bay.
A police dive squad recovered five bodies from inside the vessel following the rescue operation that spanned nearly seven hours. While, six people were rescued, having suffered minor injuries.
Earlier, images on social media showed survivors waving for help on the upturned hull of the 8.5-metre boat, which police confirmed belonged to a local charter business.
The boat that capsized was rented by a group of women.
There were “indications” that the boat had collided with a whale, however, police did not immediately provide further detail as their investigation is still underway.
