Karachi: Noor Jehan, an African elephant, took her last breath at the local zoo, Karachi Administrator Saif Ur Rehman confirmed on Saturday.

Noor Jehan had been unwell with a fever for a day and had been suffering from multiple health issues for several days. Despite all-out attempts to improve her condition, the elephant's health did not improve.

During her last days, Noor Jehan received medical treatment in the form of drips and was frequently cooled down with water.

The administrator expressed his sadness over Noor Jehan's death and acknowledged the recent medical attention provided to her by foreign vets from FOUR PAWS International.

According to the reports, the Zoo administration stated that a few months ago, Noor Jehan had undergone an operation which caused difficulty in her mobility due to complications.

It said that a few days ago, Noor Jehan went to sit in the Talab (pond) and was unable to get up again and since then, her condition worsened over time.

The Karachi's administrator stated that all efforts were made to save Noor Jehan, including treatment by world-renowned experts. A team from Four Paws, an animal welfare organization, was also brought to Karachi for the treatment of the vulture.

Saif expressed her sorrow at the loss of Noor Jehan and stated that her passing has been a source of grief for everyone involved. This incident highlights the need for greater attention to be paid to the conservation of wildlife in Pakistan, he added.
