Quetta: In collaboration with the Industrial Global Union, the Pakistan Central Mines Labour Federation (PCMLF) conducted a workshop on mine safety aimed at enhancing the protection and well-being of workers in the coal mining sector.
The workshop, titled "Ensuring Safe Mining Practices," gathered union representatives from across the country to address crucial safety concerns and provide training on occupational hazards.
The event, held at a local venue in Quetta, brought together key figures from the industry and labor organizations. Notable attendees included Tanveer Nazir, representing the Industrial Global Union; Sultan Muhammad Khan, Central Secretary-General of PCMLF; Abdul Sattar, Central Chairman of PCMLF; Abdul Sattar Junior, Central Finance Secretary of PCMLF; Munawar Ahmed Baloch, Registrar Union Balochistan; Farkhanda Orangzeb, representative from the National Commission for Human Rights Balochistan; Shah Ali Bugti, President of All Pakistan Labour Federation Balochistan; Ali Bash Khan, President of United Marble Workers Union Chaghi; and Abdul Ghaffar Jamali, President of Agriculture Culture Employment Union.
During the workshop, Master Trainer Abdul Haleem Khan delivered comprehensive training on mine safety protocols, highlighting the importance of preventive measures, proper use of safety equipment, and adherence to labor laws. Participants actively engaged in discussions and practical demonstrations, gaining valuable insights into risk assessment, emergency response procedures, and safety protocols to minimize accidents and injuries in the coal mining sector.
The central representatives, including Sultan Muhammad Khan and other prominent figures, emphasized the urgent need for industrial recognition of the mining sector and proposed amendments to the Mine Act of 1923 to ensure the highest standards of safety and protection for mine workers. They also stressed the implementation of modern communication systems in Balochistan's coal mines to facilitate efficient coordination during emergencies.
Furthermore, the workshop participants addressed the pressing issue of providing adequate safety equipment to mine workers. They underscored the significance of essential protective gear, including mining shoes, goggles, helmets, safety belts, safety hooks, gloves, protective glasses, respiratory equipment, lighting, and water facilities within the coal mines.
The representatives emphasized the installation of advanced gas detection systems to monitor gas levels, proper ventilation arrangements, and the establishment of designated rest areas and canteens for workers. They also discussed the provision of clean drinking water and access to comprehensive medical facilities for mine employees and their families. Additionally, the importance of educational facilities for children of miners and recreational amenities near residential colonies were highlighted, aiming to enhance the overall quality of life for mining communities.
The workshop concluded with a renewed commitment from all stakeholders to prioritize mine safety and implement the recommended measures effectively. The PCMLF, in collaboration with the Industrial Global Union, remains dedicated to advocating for the rights and well-being of workers in the mining sector, striving to create a safer and more secure working environment for all.
