Ecuador: An unidentified individual opened fire and fatally shot a presidential candidate at the conclusion of an election rally.
According to international media reports, political rallies are ongoing in Ecuador in the lead-up to the elections, and during one such rally, presidential hopeful Fernando Valasencio became the target of this unfortunate attack.
The attack took place while Valasencio was sitting in a car in the city of Quito after addressing the rally.
Fernando Valasencio was also a member of Ecuador's National Assembly.
Police officials confirmed that in retaliatory action, the assailant was severely injured during the police operation and subsequently succumbed to his injuries after being apprehended.
Ecuador's incumbent president, in a statement, expressed his condolences and confirmed the tragic killing of Fernando Valasencio, affirming that anyone involved in this incident will not escape justice.
The presidential election is scheduled for August 20th, and the country has been experiencing an increase in drug-related crimes, making the political campaign challenging due to heightened security concerns.
