Libya: Floods in Libya have caused widespread devastation, with the death toll expected to reach a staggering 20,000 people.
The city of Derna, situated along the Mediterranean Sea, has borne the brunt of the disaster, witnessing dam failures, the collapse of multi-story buildings, and the displacement of thousands.
As of now, the city has recorded 3,840 deaths, with most of the victims hailing from Sudan and Egypt.
However, this number is likely to rise significantly, possibly even doubling, according to Aviation Minister Hachim Abu Chikwat in eastern Libya.
Mayor Abdul Moneim al-Ghaithi estimates that the death toll in Derna alone could range between 18,000 and 20,000, considering the extent of destruction across various districts.
Official reports indicate 10,000 people as missing, while the United Nations aid agency suggests at least 5,000.
The catastrophe has left a trail of personal belongings and debris strewn along the seashore, with homes swept away by the devastating floodwaters.
