Danushka Gunathilaka acquitted of rape charges due to lack of evidence.
Sydney: Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka has been acquitted of rape charges in a Sydney court due to insufficient evidence. The court dropped the remaining charge related to the alleged rape case.
The case hinged on the inability of the complainant to provide substantial evidence, making it challenging to prove non-consensual acts occurred during the incident.
The court found the cricketer to be truthful in his police interview, highlighting that the complainant had deliberately provided false testimony, leading to questions about her credibility.
Danushka Gunathilaka was arrested in November last year on rape charges while he was in Sydney with the Sri Lankan cricket team for the T20 World Cup.
Initially facing four charges, three had already been dropped, and now he has been acquitted of the remaining charge.
