Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Monday refused to postpone the general elections in the light of the Senate resolution.
According to the details, Election Commission sent a letter to the Senate Secretariat on the resolution approved by the Senate regarding the postponement of the scheduled elections on February 8 in the country.
The Election Commission said in the post that after reviewing your resolution, they announced the polling date on February 8 in consultation with the President Dr. Arif Alvi.
In the Election Commission's letter, it is further stated that the instructions have been issued to the caretaker governments for law and order. The Supreme Court has expressed its determination that the elections will be held on February 8.
The general elections and local government elections were held in winter in the past. Therefore, postponing the election at this stage is not an appropriate advice and at this time the General Election 2024 cannot be postponed, the letter added.
It is pertinent to note that earlier on January 5, Senator Dilawar Khan first presented the resolution to postpone the general elections in the Senate, which was approved by the majority vote of the House. At the time of approval of this resolution, 14 senators were present in the Senate.
Apart from this, another resolution was submitted in the Senate to postpone the election scheduled for February 8, which was submitted by the independent senator from FATA, Hilal-ur-Rehman.
