Pak-Navy playing vital role in promoting safe use of ocean resources: Naval Chief
The World Oceans Day is being observed on Tuesday (today). This year the theme is ‘The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods’.
On the occasion, Naval Chief Muhammad Amjad Khan Niazi stated “Pakistan Navy is playing a lead role in promoting safe and sustainable use of ocean resources”.
“Some of our initiatives include beach cleaning, intensified mangroves plantation, banning use of destructive fishing nets, tackling oil pollution at sea and coordination with industries to reduce waste dumping into the sea,” he added.
The Naval Chief said a number of events and activities have been arranged to raise awareness about oceans and their resources.
World Oceans Day is celebrated annually on June 8.
According to the United Nations (UN), oceans are the lungs of our planet and a major source of food and medicine, and a critical part of the biosphere.
The main purpose of the day is to highlight the impact of human actions on the ocean and develop a worldwide movement for the sustainable management of the world's oceans.
The day is observed to highlight the importance of water bodies as they provide shelter to countless fauna and flora which provide us with life-saving oxygen.
Moreover, the day is celebrated to generate awareness about human activities like dumping plastic pollution, garbage disposal, oil leaks to send a message to save the oceans.
