Urban flooding feared as more rain to lash parts of country

PMD says heavy to very heavy rainfalls are predicted in most parts of the country

Lahore: Rain lashed in most parts of the Punjab on Saturday, inundating low lying areas in many cities, while Pakistan Meteorological Department predicted more rains in Punjab.

PMD also predicted heavy to very heavy rainfalls in other parts of the country. “Rain-windstorm/thundershower (with few heavyfalls) is expected in Kashmir, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Potohar Region, Islamabad, northeast/south Balochistan, southeast/upper Sindh and Gilgit-Baltistan,” informed the national weather forecaster.

During last 24 hours many parts of the country received scattered rainfall while many areas experienced torrential downpour which caused urban flooding while low lying areas remained submerged with water. Rain-wind/thundershower occurred at isolated places in Islamabad, upper/central Punjab, east Sindh, upper Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, east Balochistan and Kashmir.

According to Met Office, maximum rain was 113 mm in Islamabad, while Rawalpindi 102 mm, Chaklala 64, Narowal 36, Lahore 88, Sialkot 07, Chakwal, Murree 04, Jhelum, Mangla, Jhang 01 mm. 

PMD has warned that heavy rains during next 24 hours may generate flash flooding in local nullahs/streams of Sialkot, Narowal, Jhelum, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Lahore, Hafizabad, Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad/ Rawalpindi, Attock, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Kohistan, Dir, Swat, Shangla, Nowshera, Mardan, Swabi, Charsadda, Kohat, Karak and Kashmir.

Moreover, Punjab Disaster Management Authority has warned that heavy downpour may cause urban flooding in low lying areas of Gujranwala, Mandi Bahauddin, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Sialkot, Narowal, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Layyah, Bhakkar and D.G. Khan during the forecasted period.

It has warned of landslides may cause roads closure at the vulnerable hilly areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan during the forecast period.
