Mangoes are usually yellow or green in colour, but very few people know that world’s most expensive mangoes are purple in shade.
Known as Miyazaki mango, this kind of mangoes is usually found in Japan’s Miyazaki city and is considered as one of the most famous fruits of the area.
These mangoes were purchased by people at the rate of over Rs 400,000 per kilogram in the international market last year.
Miyazaki mangoes are labeled and sold as ‘Taiyo-no-Tomago’ or ‘Eggs of Sunshine’. With a shape like dinosaur’s eggs, these mangoes turn flaming red from purple when ripened.
They are 15 percent more high in sugar content than regular mangoes with 350g weight. Like reular mangoes, these too available only from April to August.
Besides Japan, purple mangoes are also cultivated in Thailand, the Philippines, and India.
