Islamabad: Following the signature of President Asif Ali Zardari, the National Assembly Secretariat issued a gazette notification of the 26th Constitutional Amendment.
According to the details, after the Senate, the 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill was also approved by the National Assembly on Monday morning with a 2/3 majority, which has been issued from the National Assembly Secretariat.
President Zardari signed the 26th Constitutional Amendment, and after the Gazette Notification, the 26th Constitutional Amendment was implemented.
According to the constitutional amendment, the new Chief Justice will be appointed by the Parliamentary Committee.
It is pertinent to note that the National Assembly session started at 11:30pm under Speaker Ayaz Sadiq after several hours of delay and was summoned at 6:00pm on Sunday. It was postponed at 11:58pm. After that, the meeting resumed at 12:05am and continued till 5:00am on Monday.
At the National Assembly session, Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar motion for amendment and 225 members voted for the approval of the movement, while 12 members voted in opposition.
After that, the amendment was approved clause-by-clause. The alleged Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI )-backed four independent members voted in favor of constitutional amendments, Usman Ali, Mubarak Zeb Khan, Zahir Qureshi, Aurangzeb Khachi and Chaudhry Ilyas of PML-Q.
Speaking in the House after the approval of the bill, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said that people in the country are longing for justice, today is a historic day, a wonderful example of national solidarity and consensus has been established once again.
Earlier, at a meeting chaired by Chairman Senate Yusuf Raza Gilani yesterday, the country's upper house approved the 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill by 2/3rd majority.
