(Web Desk): Mark Carney was sworn in as the 24th Prime Minister of Canada on Friday, replacing Justin Trudeau, who stepped down in January after nearly 10 years in office.

Carney, a former central banker, was recently chosen as the leader of the Liberal Party. This marks his first time holding an elected position. On Friday, Carney took an oath of allegiance to King Charles III and swore to keep all matters related to the king confidential before promising to faithfully carry out his duties as Prime Minister. During the ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, Carney’s Cabinet members were also sworn in.

Though Carney is expected to call for new elections soon, the situation for his party may have improved due to US President Donald Trump’s actions. Before Trump took office, the Liberal Party’s popularity was declining, and they were heading toward a tough election. However, Trump’s insulting remarks about Canada, his repeated calls for Canada to become a US state, and his decision to start an unwarranted trade war with Canada have helped shift the political landscape, giving the Liberals a renewed boost.

Some of Carney’s Cabinet members, including Francois-Philippe Champagne, believe the change in leadership could be a chance to "reset" relations with the US. Trump had a strained relationship with Trudeau and other top Liberals like Chrystia Freeland. The tensions between Ottawa and Washington, largely due to Trump’s economic actions, eventually led to a split between Trudeau and Freeland, which played a role in bringing down Trudeau's government.

With a new leadership, the Liberal Party hopes to take advantage of the political shift caused by Trump’s aggressive stance.
